3 – Quali ritieni siano i pro e i contro dell’uno e dell’altro?

Baci e abbracci

Lexi

 Intervista di Barbara e Caterina

Hello Lexi, firstly we thank you for granting us this interview.

Thank you for asking me! I’m so thrilled you sought me out!

We must say that all the people of our blog have read your trilogy "Un cuore non basta (Here and now series) " and we can say that it is one of the few times that we all agree to proclame unanimously your artistry.
We think that this is very unusual because we are a bit 'discerning tastes and not exactly the same, without considering that we are all a bit' ... witches.

Wow! Thank you so much! I’m truly flattered!

Your novels have been described by the New York Times and USA Today, as intense emotional and wickedly sexy, I must say that we would like to add a mystery and a lot of suspense. After that we start the interview.

1 - Lexi in Italy now is the New Adult category book period . The “Here and now series” has been classified in this category, but we don’t agree. We think it seemed a new adult abnormal, in reality there is much more. Do you agree with this classification?

New Adult is such a new category, even in the United States, that there’s still a lot of debate over what a “New Adult” novel is and isn’t. For me, New Adult fiction is fiction that explores a character or characters’ finding themselves as adults and figuring out how they fit in the “real world.” Where I find Young Adult fiction is often about figuring out who you want to be, I believe New Adult fiction is about how who you are fits with who you want to be and trying to make peace when the two don’t always jive.

2 - We know that you were a University Professor. You became a full time writer, do you miss something of your old job?

I loved being in the classroom and connecting with students. Teaching Creative Writing was my favourite because I got to encourage young, aspiring authors. It wasn’t so long ago that I was the college student who needed the encouragement. I miss those aspects, but I don’t miss all the grading! J

3 - What would be the pros and cons of both jobs?

There’s a certain “clout” that comes with being a college professor that one just doesn’t have when one writes steamy romances. That said, I wouldn’t trade this for anything. I love writing and it’s what I’ve wanted to do since I was very young.

4 - Is there any advice you would you give to new emerging writers who are trying to make this their profession?

Read a lot. Write a lot. Analyse both what you read and what you write. And persist when all logic would indicate that you’ve failed. Very, very few writers succeed with their first novel.

5 - Which writer of romance did inspire you and which do you prefer?

There are so many! Jude Deveraux was the author of the first romance novels I read, so she’s an important influence on me, but I was also inspired by many others—Jennifer Cruise, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, and Victoria Dahl just to name a few.

6 - What male characters of romance books that you read, he had particularly impressed you? And there are some common characteristics that do you like?

I LOVE a hero who loves his heroine even when she’s totally screwed up. I’m a sucker for unconditional love like that. J

7 - What about the female protagonists, what features are essential to you?

I like strong heroines who either aren’t afraid or ashamed of their sexuality or who learn not to be.

8 - As we said this series contains much mystery and suspense. What about other your novels not yet published in Italy? Do they contain suspence too?

There’s often a bit of a suspense element in my books. I don’t plot before I write—I figure it out as I go—so I enjoy the mystery for myself as I write a series.

9 - In this series, you wrote about two men who fell in love with all the readers, although very different from each other, without revealing anything, one inevitably will remain alone. Do you think, you will give him an happy end in another book?

Yes! I’m actually writing his book now and it will be published in English in July of 2015. It’s called PLAYING WITH FIRE…and you might be surprised to find out you know the heroine as well.

10 - You had a preference between the two? Which team did you support? Nate or Max team? We mean, who would you choose between two men?

I wasn’t sure which man Hanna was going to choose until I finished writing the second book. I love them both and am so glad it wasn’t a choice I had to make! Of course, right now I’m mightily in love with the guy she didn’t choose since I’m writing his book and he’s making me swoon on a daily basis!

11 - We tried to give a face to the main protagonists. Did you think of some famous person that inspired writing? Who could be Nate, Max and Hanna?

I’m always so bad at this. Since they’re so concrete in my mind, there’s never a single actor who “looks like” my characters, but I always think fans do a nice job of picking out matches.

12- The kind of narrative adopted in his novels is unique and perfect. You start indeed with a single narrative POV (Hanna) in the first book alternating present and past. In the second and third book, you write an alternating narrative POV for the three protagonists always with flashbacks from the past time of Hanna. Was it not difficult to manage it? Did you have already used it before?

Thank you!
I almost always write alternating POV, and I *always* rely heavily on flashbacks, though obviously not as heavily as in book 2, which is literally 50% flashback. I was pleasantly shocked that readers didn’t seem to mind.

13 - What is the feature that you like most in each of the protagonists?

I loved that Nate Crane was a secret dork (that’s a soft spot for me!), that Max evolved so much as a character from when he started dating Hanna to the end of the series, and that Hanna learned that it’s okay to make a choice just because it’s the best choice for HER.

14 - One of the central themes of the book is the relationship that the female protagonist has with food that influence her relationships. Did you live closely similar experiences?

Hanna has weight issues and body image issues that give her other medical issues, and I could completely relate to her. I’ve struggled with my weight my whole life, and I wanted readers to understand what that’s like and how it can alter your perception of your entire world. I also wanted to show how the right man can teach you you’re beautiful as you are. My husband did that for me, and it’s what I wish for everyone.

15 - Which of your other books after this series, if you had to choose would be published in Italian, in short, what do you think would be most appreciated?

I would love to see Lizzy’s books published in Italian. The Reckless and Real series is sexy and suspenseful, and since Liz is Hanna’s twin, readers are already connected with her.
Of course, I’d also love to see you get a chance to read PLAYING WITH FIRE, the book about the guy Hanna didn’t choose.
Thank you so much for the interview! I hope you get a chance to read more of my books in Italian!
XOXO,
Lexi
